If you want epic vibes…
Tired of people recommending Tolkien or Martin when you say you want epic? Here are some different ones with some epic storytelling.
-
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
In my opinion, no list of epic books can be complete without this series. This book begins the series. There is no way you can stop here. It is 7 books in total and takes you on a winding path to its devastating yet satisfying ending.
-
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
If you want something other than HP, try this one. It’s better written, it’s more complicated, and definitely more gay. Maggie Stiefvater created a whole cast of complicated protagonists and you love them all.
-
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
Ok, so i do have ONE well-known epic fantasy author on this list. Sanderson’s Mistborn world gets fully fleshed in this first book and his magic system is fascinating and unique. I can’t NOT recommend this series.
-
Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole
This one is usually categorized as “romantasy” but it really isn’t; the love story is not central to the plot. So this one isn’t done yet but Penn Cole promises the fourth and final book is on it’s way!
-
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
I recommend this series on one condition: know that we don’t know when or if we will ever get the third. Rothfuss is an amazing writer and he is quite the feminist, which is always necessary for me to enjoy any story.
-
From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
So this one actually is Romantasy, but it is EPIC. I have yet to read the latest book but man, does this one take you on a ride! A great twist on paranormal tropes. It also has excellent Graphic Audio audiobooks for the series.
